What should I expect during a fluoride treatment?

Fluoride treatments are quick, painless, and non-invasive. A dental professional begins by applying a concentrated fluoride gel to the front of the teeth with a brush. The treatment only takes a few minutes, and you’ll be asked to avoid eating or drinking for about 30 minutes post-treatment to allow the fluoride to fully absorb into your teeth. Should you have any questions or concerns before or after your treatment, we will be glad to assist you.

Who should get fluoride treatments?

Fluoride treatments benefit patients of all ages, especially those at higher risk for cavities. Children and teens can especially benefit, as fluoride strengthens developing teeth, while adults with weakened enamel, dry mouth, or a history of decay can also greatly benefit. Patients with braces or restorations may need extra protection against cavities as well. If you are prone to tooth sensitivity or frequent cavities, our team may recommend adding fluoride treatments to your treatment plan to help remineralize your tooth enamel and help prevent decay.

How often should I get fluoride treatments?

Most patients benefit from fluoride treatments every six months, typically during routine checkups. However, those at higher risk for tooth decay—such as individuals with dry mouth, gum recession, or frequent cavities—may need fluoride treatments every three to four months. Our team can assess your oral health status and recommend the right frequency to help protect and strengthen your teeth against decay and sensitivity.

Are fluoride treatments covered by insurance?

Many dental insurance plans cover fluoride treatments for children and teens, as they are essential for cavity prevention. Coverage for adults varies, but some plans may include fluoride treatments for patients at higher risk for decay. If you’re unsure about your coverage, we recommend contacting your provider directly. Seastone Dental also accepts CareCredit™ financing, and our in-house membership plan includes routine fluoride treatments.
