Signs You Need a Dental Crown
January 17, 2023 7:55 pmA restoration procedure commonly performed by dentists is dental crowns. A crown is a covering made from various materials depending on your preference, metals, porcelain, resin, or ceramics, that fits over the visible part of a damaged tooth. It helps to keep the integrity of the tooth protected long-term and restore it to its most natural appearance and shape.
So how does one know when they need a crown? Firstly, you’ll want to consult with your dentist to see if a dental crown is the best treatment option for you, but in the meantime, here are some signs to look out for.
Broken or Fractured Teeth
Once a tooth is broken or cracked, it doesn’t heal. So oftentimes, a dentist may recommend a crown to restore the tooth. The crown will prevent the tooth from breaking further and also keep out further bacteria from entering the damaged tooth and creating painful infections that could lead to tooth decay.
Decay
If more than half of the tooth is damaged by decay, it could be difficult to hold a filling. In such cases, a crown may be a better option to contain the decay, prevent bacterial infection from spreading to other teeth, and protect the weakened teeth from outside, hostile conditions. It will also restore the tooth to a more natural appearance.
Excessive Wear
Some patients may experience worn down teeth due to bruxism, acid reflux, or a highly acidic diet. Worn down teeth can cause misalignment and the bite to collapse. A dental crown might be recommended to restore the teeth to its original shape, size, and appearance.
