What’s the Process to Replace a Loose Dental Implant?
May 9, 2025 9:00 amA dental implant is meant to be a long-term solution for a missing tooth. But like anything in the body, things can shift, change, or break down over time. If your implant feels loose, it’s important not to ignore it. While it may not always mean total failure, it’s still a sign that something needs attention.
Here’s what to expect if your dental implant needs to be evaluated — and possibly replaced.
Step One: A Thorough Exam and Diagnosis
Not every loose dental implant means the implant post itself is the issue. Sometimes, the crown (the visible part) or the abutment (the connector) has come loose, not the implant embedded in the bone. That’s why the first step is a full evaluation, including dental imaging.
At this stage, your dentist will gently test the stability of the implant, examine the gums, and check the surrounding bone. X-rays help determine if the post has lost support or if the problem is higher up.
Step Two: Determining the Cause
Implants can loosen for a few reasons. Common ones include gum infection (peri-implantitis), bone loss, or mechanical issues like a worn abutment or cracked crown. Once the cause is clear, the team can map out next steps.
If it’s just the crown or abutment, the fix may be simple. But if the implant post is compromised, removal and replacement may be needed.
Step Three: Removal and Healing (if Needed)
If the implant itself needs to be removed, your dentist will take it out gently. Healing time may vary depending on the condition of the bone and tissue. In some cases, bone grafting is recommended to rebuild the area before placing a new implant.
Step Four: Planning for Replacement
Once the site is ready, your dentist can place a new implant. After healing, a new crown is attached — and your smile is restored.
