Signs You Have a Healthy Mouth
July 19, 2023 7:38 pmYou may know what oral health problems to watch out for, but how do you know if your mouth is healthy? Here are five signs you’re doing things right and maintaining a healthy mouth:
1. Strong, Cavity-Free Teeth
Healthy teeth are strong and can chew food without issues. They’re also free from cavities, which are tiny holes caused by tooth decay. You can keep your teeth strong and prevent cavities with good oral hygiene, regular trips to the dentist, and a healthy diet.
2. Firm Gums
Your gum health is very important because gums support your teeth. Healthy gums are firm to the touch. What color should they be? For people with lighter skin, pink is the optimal color, while people with darker skin have naturally darker gums.
3. Pink, Smooth Tongue
A healthy tongue is pink and mostly smooth, though it does have tiny bumps that help you taste things. If you notice any changes like white patches, coatings, or larger lumps, you could be dealing with a health problem.
4. Neutral Breath
Your breath will never naturally smell like mint, but healthy mouths produce mostly neutral-smelling odors. If you deal with persistent bad breath, you could be dealing with cavities, gum disease, or other issues.
5. No Bleeding When You Brush or Floss
When you brush and floss, you should never see blood. Blood is a common symptom of gum disease or brushing too hard. Healthy mouths don’t bleed from regular brushing and flossing, so if you’re bleeding, it’s time to make a dental appointment!
