The Difference Between Amalgam & Composite Fillings
March 22, 2023 8:02 pmWe know patients never like to hear they have a cavity. However, cavities can be quickly and effectively treated with dental fillings. When it comes to dental fillings, there typically is an option between filling materials. However, most dentists offer and encourage patients to get a composite filling due to its many advantages over other fillings.
What Causes the Need for Fillings?
Eating or drinking items that contain a lot of sugar allows bacteria in the plaque to attack tooth enamel. The stickiness of plaque helps acids bind to the teeth for a period of time. As enamel wears, bacteria can get in and eat away at the tooth. Once this happens, tooth decay or a cavity starts to develop, and there is a need for a dental filling to repair the tooth.
Amalgam Fillings
Traditional silver-colored fillings are formally known as amalgam fillings. Amalgam fillings are long-lasting and inexpensive. However, due to their appearance and the potential sensitivity to the metal material, many dentists and patients have begun to stray away from amalgam.
Composite Fillings
A composite filling is crafted from composite resin, a combination of material and special coloring agents to match the teeth. The material of composite fillings isn’t harmful and is as strong and durable as amalgam fillings.
Amalgam vs. Composite Fillings
Both types of dental fillings have their advantages and disadvantages. While ultimately, the choice is up to the patient and a personalized treatment plan crafted by an experienced dental team, some factors to consider when it comes to dental fillings are color, tooth condition, affordability, and durability.
